Amana Society Service Company: Powering the Amana Colonies
The Amana Society Service Company delivers reliable electricity and water utilities to approximately 1,500 residents and over 160 businesses across the seven villages of the Amana Colonies. Although it operates as an investor-owned utility owned by Amana Society shareholders, the Service Company functions similarly to a municipal utility—offering street lighting and additional community services.
Innovation & Sustainability
The Service Company has a modern, underground electrical distribution system for all seven colonies with automatic meter reading technology for improved efficiency and accuracy.
Electricity is sourced through the Resale Purchasing Group of Iowa (RPGI), a coalition of municipal and rural electric providers that negotiates competitive rates. The Service Company also embraces green energy, purchasing power from the 2.8-megawatt Amana Farms anaerobic digester—a cutting-edge facility that converts beef cattle waste and industrial byproducts into methane for electricity generation.
To ensure power reliability, the Service Company operates a 24-megawatt diesel generating plant, offering backup power during outages and strengthening negotiation leverage for lower electricity rates.
A Legacy of Service
Beyond electricity and water, the Service Company once provided telephone services, which were sold to a private provider in the 1990s. While its focus has evolved, its commitment to the Amana Colonies’ growth, sustainability, and innovation remains steadfast.
